Instinct

(2005, color/sound, 2:08)

This is video documentation of the installation Instinct to demonstrate the three sculptures in action. This series of sculptures explores the sonic characteristics (pitch, timbre, amplitude) of scale, texture, form, color, and material. The pieces are designed to create a sonic territory within the space, which promotes an intimate and interactive relationship with the viewer. Musth bellows and moans, and when the motion sensor is activated the sculpture shudders slightly. Feedback is suspended as its water pumps and trickles, and we experience the audio in real time from within the reverberant body of the sculpture. The LED light of National Proximity Rot pulses steadily, and when I activate the infrared sensor the garbled sound of classical music on NPR (National Public Radio) emerges from its small, plastic body. The purpose of this video documentation also helps one gauge the scale of the sculptures, as well as the size of the gallery itself.
